Spiritual Grounding: How does it work?

With all that is happening in the modern world, anxiety and depression are at an all time high. This has led people in search of natural ways to work on their anxious or depressive feelings. As someone who was diagnosed with anxiety and depression when I was in middle school, I am still learning how to live with the thoughts and feelings that stem from both. As an adult, I have tried various methods, medicines, and activities to help calm my anxious mind. While some of the methods are more helpful than others, I personally enjoy activities that promote spiritual grounding.

What is spiritual grounding?

Spiritual grounding is the belief that your spiritual energy is in a state of chaos and requires varying techniques to refocus or calm down. Many believe that this natural and holistic approach helps not only your spirit, but also your physical and mental health as well. Spiritual Grounding techniques promote mindfulness practices that cause a person to slow down their busy day-to-day life.

So… Why practice spiritual grounding?

Will spiritual grounding cure medical diagnosis? That is a hard no… However, it will help you learn how to recognize those anxious/ depressive thoughts and feelings. Once recognized, spiritual grounding practices can help you work through those aspects to alleviate some of the stress that comes with each episode.

5 Spiritual Grounding Techniques & the benefits behind each

  1. Hiking

Hiking has a multitude of health benefits, as well as spiritual benefits. Walking is the best low impact exercise that still burns body fat. Hiking intensifies this activity depending on the terrain of the hike. This activity will help lower your blood pressure, shed toxins from your body, and increases your energy levels, while also improving your nightly sleep. Spiritually, hiking allows you to clear your mind and manage your stress. This allows your spiritual energy to go from chaotic to a more balanced and peaceful state.

  2. Meditation outside

Meditation allows yourself to clear your mind and lower your heart rate. Meditation is not about completely clearing your mind, it is about having control over your thoughts and feelings. Taking the time to slow down and evaluate each thought and processing each feeling will help relieve much of the internal stress that your physical body holds onto. 3. Outdoor Yoga

When someone discusses yoga, do you immediately just imagine crazy contortion and uncomfortable positions? Yoga is a great activity that helps build and strengthen your muscles by positioning your body in different ways. If you are a yogi, then you know that yoga is more than just stretching. Similarly to meditation, yoga helps slow down your mind and heart rate. When done outside, this activity is a great practice for spiritual grounding.

  4. Swimming

Even though I am a fire sign, I have always felt connected and calmed by water. Water is such a cleansing element that is readily available around the world. When chaotic energy gets the best of you, immersing yourself in water will help you reset that energy using its cleansing and healing properties.

  5. Gardening

When we think of grounding, we obviously think about dirt and soil. Gardening involves being one with the Earth to promote life through the plants you choose to grow and nurture. This activity practices mindfulness that requires patience and care throughout the whole process. Nurturing the world around us reminds us of how we need to nurture our bodies and spirit.

Final thoughts?

In life, it is inevitable that we will have ups and downs. For this reason, it is important how we respond to those energetic changes. Chaos is something that is unpredictable and uncontrollable. Using the spiritual grounding techniques aforementioned will help subdue chaotic energy. These techniques connect the mind, body, and soul. When your mind, body, and soul are connected, then your spiritual energy finds balance in a peaceful state.
