4 Ways to Protect Your Tarot Decks

Depicted here are two of my favorite tarot bags created by instagram’s @moonlit.faye

When I started reading tarot, I would have never thought that about the inconvenience that comes with owning a collection. Within the last decade as a tarot reader, I have accumulated a variety of occult items, books, tarot, and oracle decks. Most tarot readers will attest to the importance of protecting and respecting your collection, especially the decks within that collection. Some of my favorite decks, such as The Everyday Witch Tarot by Deborah Blake & Elisabeth Alba, came with amazing guidebooks to help learn the traditional system of tarot through the eyes of the illustrating author. Unfortunately, some of the best guidebooks are larger than the deck itself, thus requiring a larger package. This minor inconvenience led to my investigation for how I could protect my tarot decks AND make sure that my collection does not overwhelm my living space.

My favorite ways to protect & organize my tarot Decks:

  1. Handcrafted Tarot Bags

The majority of my decks are housed within handcrafted tarot bags. My infatuation with handcrafted tarot accessories started during the COVID pandemic of 2020. To fill my newly crocheting my own tarot bags. After I created a few for myself and friends, I started to research small businesses through instagram and etsy that led me to discover some of my favorite small businesses that carry or create tarot accessories. I discovered the most beautifully unique tarot bags of various styles by @moonlit.faye and @Juliushandmade on instagram. These two creators quickly became my favorite businesses to follow and support.

  1. Wooden Box

As mentioned in my blog Celebrating Acceptance: Life of a Tarot Reader, for my birthday I was surprised with tarot accessories, tarot decks, and oracle decks from my loved ones. One of the tarot accessories I received was this beautifully crafted tarot box. I was pleasantly surprised when I realized that this box was multifunctional. This deck not only protected my tarot cards, but also provided a daily pull stand and a chart for pendulum readings.

  2. Wrap in Cloth

Let’s face it, we all go through challenging times where money is tight. If you are short on cash and you are have limited knowledge on crochet or other crafting hobbies, then an effective way to protect your cards is wrapping the deck in a cloth. Prior to discovering my love of handcrafted tarot bags, I used to keep my tarot & oracle decks folded in a cloth. This was always a simple solution to protect and easily transport my divination tools.

  3. Original Packaging

Do not feel obligated to purchase or create new tarot bags or boxes if you feel comfortable with the original deck packaging. Thankfully, some decks such as The Pacific Northwest Tarot by Brendan Marnell or The Lightseer’s Tarot by Chris-Anne Donnelly come in quality packaging with a manageable size. There is nothing wrong with enjoying the original packaging if you have no problem with it.

Why am I so particular about tarot packaging?

Whereas some decks come in quality and manageable packaging, other decks come in something more challenging or even just less reliable. I have never heard or been told that you must package your tarot deck or use protective packaging. The only reason to do so is preference. With all things in life, I am very particular about how my personal belongings are preserved and used. So, do you have to purchase or create something for your tarot deck? No, absolutely not. However, if you are interested in doing so, I hope this blog gave you some ideas on how you can protect your tarot decks.
