Systems of Tarot

Did you know that there are multiple systems of Tarot?

Tarot consists of a multitude of systems that spans from the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith (RWS) to Thoth to Lenormand. While most of the mainstream decks that are available in most chain bookstores or local metaphysical locations follow the RWS system, you can still locate Thoth or Lenormand through online sources like Amazon and Etsy.

When first investigating tarot, you have to discover what system feels most comfortable for you. It’s important to evaluate what kind of tarot reading you are looking for because that will establish which system you should first seek to purchase.

What are the differences?

  1. Well when comparing the RWS and Thoth tarot, there are differences between suits and numerology for each card.

  2. All decks can vary in meaning, imagery, and the type of questions that might be used for a reading.

  3. All decks can vary in size, shape, and amount of cards.

Well, aside from the structural differences of each deck (the suits, numerology to card, and imagery), the major differences will be the meaning and connection behind each card, as well as the availability of that system. As well as the reference resources that are available for each deck. The RWS system will have the most available and attainable books, classes, and articles to help you understand and read tarot. While the Thoth or Lenormand systems of tarot have resources that you can find online or in select stores, they are much more challenging to locate.
