Evaluation of Secondhand Divination Tools

In previous blogs, I have explained the superstition behind gifted tarot decks. Originally, I was a strong believer behind the idea that the only way to acquire a tarot deck was to be gifted said deck. That was up until my father provided me with resources that led me to understand the history behind that belief. When I became brave enough to purchase my own decks, I would research any deck prior to purchasing. Using youtube walkthroughs and reviews, I would investigate each deck I was interested. I wanted to know if the back of the deck was reversible, aesthetically pleasing, what the card stock was like, or if the deck was too pipish before purchasing a deck. In my early years, I had always purchased new decks and never thought about the costs or benefits behind used divination tools.

So, let’s weigh the options behind used divination tools.

Advantages for purchasing used divination tools:

  • Saving money! Certain decks that do not connect with someone may be found cheaper online or through second hand stores.

  • Reduce, reuse, recycle… save the planet by reducing your consumer carbon footprint!

  • Locating high value out of print decks, such as the original “Mythic Tarot” or “The Hilda Tarot”. Keep in mind, similarly to most collectible items, these high value decks can be pricey.

Disadvantages for purchasing used divination tools:

  • Taking the extra time to cleanse the divination tool, many who sell their tools do not take the time to cleanse their energy from the divinationi item. Because of this, make sure to cleanse any used divination tools prior to use.

  • Damaged cards (water, scratched, bent, etc)

  • Missing items such as cards, guidebooks, reading mats, or protection bags that initially come with the new version.

Superstition behind Used Divination tools

Have you ever went to a store where they had tester lotion, perfume, and make up items? Two years ago, I went to a neat metaphysical store called Alchemist in Richmond, VA where they had tester tarot and oracle decks. I was enthralled by the tester decks. When coming to this store, I figured that the tester decks were provided for people like me, those who were particular about their decks and wanted to know more about them before purchase. While that was my initial belief, the cashier explained to me that the tester decks were provided for people to look at and touch prior to purchase. This specific store did not accept returns, as many divination practitioners belief that energy left behind in a deck could disrupt the accuracy. For this reason, the store has a tester deck for anyone to explore before actual purchase.

What is the accuracy behind used divination tools?

It is not uncommon for there to be a disconnection between a deck and a tarot reader. When that happens, most readers will try to gift or sell their tarot decks that they feel disconnected. Over the years, I’ve been gifted decks from friends and family. Reasoning behind this, the original owner wanted the deck to find someone that had a more meaningful connection. Some of these gifted items have become my regular use decks. The oracle deck depicted above is a favorite of mine which travels with me everywhere. I was gifted this deck by a dear friend and it has become one of my most used and loved decks. I have never had an issue of accuracy with this deck, nor have I ever felt any disconnection. Whenever I receive a used divination tool, I take the time to cleanse the item to prevent any energy disruption. I find that this helps promote accuracy and developing a personal connection with the used divination tool.

How do you feel about used divination tools?

I am so thankful to receive both new and used divination tools. I feel that a gifted used deck can be more meaningful because someone is choosing to share their energy with you. It wasn’t until I visited the aforementioned store that I thought about the accuracy of the readings. I didn’t think twice about how the energy might impact reading accuracy. Now that I know more about tarot, I can see how energy could impact the accuracy of the readings. I know that I do not always connect with every tarot or oracle deck that I come in contact with. Usually, I feel guided to gift a friend or family member with the divination item.
